Executive Summary

Our project goals are to identify appropriate protocols for sampling and mapping soil organic carbon (SOC) at various scales, to compare SOC stocks that are estimated from current soil-survey (and other) databases vs. direct field measurements, and to compare the uncertainty and cost of determining SOC distribution using classical statistics (with stratification) vs. mapping spatial distributions with geostatistical techniques. During the meeting, we discussed these goals and how we could accomplish them in a collaborative research program.

For effective implementation of soil management agreements that result in increased carbon storage in soils, the quantity soil organic carbon stocks must be measured or estimated. We also must know the uncertainty of the measurement and estimates that we make. To explore these questions, our discussion at the meeting was organized around the following topics:

ˇ Sample collection protocols

ˇ Soil parameters required by models of SOC dynamics

ˇ Components of uncertainty in estimating SOC stocks

ˇ Conventional and geostatistical sampling approaches

ˇ Costs associated with estimating SOC stocks
